Albert Lum is a third generation Chinese American. In 1910, Charlie Lum immigrated
to Mississippi from Xinhui, in Guangdong Province, China. It was there that he met
Bertha Lum, who was born in Mississippi. They later moved to West Memphis, Arkansas
and it was there that they raised a family of 4 boys and 2 girls. Albert C. Lum 
was the youngest child in the family. He was born on January 21, 1934. Albert Lum
was one of the few Chinese Americans growing up in the southern United States. He
and his siblings were the only Chinese Americans at their schools. 

After a stint in the army, Albert Lum went to Tulane University and graduated with
a B.A. in accounting.  He moved to Los Angeles, California and worked at the Internal
Revenue Service with his eldest sister, Francis. In 1959, he met his wife, Theresa
C. Lum.  Theresa was a graduate of Loyola Marymount University. She was born in 
Jingchow, China, and after spending 4 years in Taiwan, came to the United States
as a student in 1954. They married in 1960.

Albert Justin Lum was born on January 31, 1964, the third child, and oldest male,
of a family of 2 girls and 2 boys.  He graduated from University of California, 
Berkeley in 1987 with an A.B. in Economics and Biochemistry.  Albert Justin studied
Mandarin Chinese in China for two years, before going to law school at University
of California, Davis, where he received his J.D. in 1992.  He has been an attorney
since 1993.

Both Albert and Albert Justin are past presidents of the Southern California Chinese
Lawyers Association, the first Asian American bar association in the United States.
The association is 50 years old.  Albert Lum was one of the founding members, and
the first President.  Albert Justin Lum was president 25 years later, in 2001.
